Medal joy for local fighters

TWO fighters from Featherstone-based Hurricanes Kickboxing Academy enjoyed success in the WOMAA (World Organisation of Martial Arts Athletes) Games in Telford.

Lee Doleman (left) and Chris Wheeldon were registered to fight in the medium and heavyweight beginners points fighting section but due to lack of other competitors decided to step up to intermediate section despite only training for four months.

Wheeldon did excellently to win a silver medal. He fought a Canadian fighter in the semi final to reach the final where he was defeated by an Irish fighter.

Doleman fought in the intermediate heavyweight section. He grabbed the winning point in the final second in the final to win a gold medal.

Both fighters also grabbed golds in the beginners continuous section the previous day.

The fighters train at Hurricanes Kickboxing Academy at St Wilfrid’s RC High School gymnasium, North Featherstone, on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings. For details contact instructor Gavin Hughes on 07502397862.
