Methley CC quickly returned to winning ways in the Premier Division of the Central Yorkshire League when they convincingly beat Hunslet Nelson by seven wickets on Saturday.
A strong effort in the field paved the way for a maximum six-point victory as Hunslet were dismissed for 112 after going in first.
Nelson were soon in trouble against opening bowlers Matthew Waite and Oral Blackford and lost four wickets for one run to stand on 24-4.
Dan McTernan, with a patient knock of 40, tried to enable his side to set a decent target, but wickets went down at regular intervals at the other end as Jack Rich and Marcus Walmsley backed up the efforts of the opening bowlers.
Hunslet were all out for 112 in the 46th over with wickets for all five Methley bowlers used – Waite taking 2-26, Blackford 2-12, Rich 2-21, Walmsley 3-31 and Ryan Meyer 1-12.
Methley’s reply saw them struggle at the start as they were reduced to 40-3 at the end of the 17th over with Nick Connolly out for 14, Richard Foster for 12 and Walmsley for nine.
But an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 76 between Chris Holliday (42 not out, including six fours and a six) and Meyer (31 not out with five boundaries) ensured they got home with no further mishaps to stay in fourth place in the Premier table.
Townville kept the pressure on leaders Wrenthorpe with a 69-run win in a low scoring contest at home to Ossett.
Townville decided to bat first, but runs proved hard to come by after they made a decent start with a 51-run opening stand between Tim Walton (25) and Jonny Booth (42).
Kylinn Vardhan joined Booth to add a further 43 runs for the second wicket, but after he was caught out for 22 in the 24th over the innings fell away,
The last nine wickets went down for 59 runs with Townville all out for 153 in the 47th over. Only Richie Bresnan (18) of the later batsman reached double figures against an attack led by Khalid Usman, who claimed 5-38.
Defending a disappointing score, Townville needed a good start in the field and they got it as the first five Ossett wickets went down for just 17.
Opening bowlers Dean Woolsey, with 3-10 from eight overs, and Richie Bresnan, 2-14 off seven overs, ripped the heart of the visitors’ top order and there was to be no big recovery.
Ossett were all out for 84 with Gavin Goodlad (21) their top scorer. Townville’s opening bowlers were well backed up by Jack Hughes (2-25), Vardhan (2-9) and Jonny Booth (1-17).
Methley A remain second from bottom in Division One after suffering a 71-run defeat at Scholes.
After putting their opponents in they made a good start in taking three early wickets before Joseph Duffy (44), Mohammed Sharafat (24) and James Little (33) led a fight back.
Methley bowlers stuck to their task, however, and dismissed the hosts for 171 with the last wicket falling off the final delivery of the 50th over.
Wicket takers were Greg Johnson (3-10), Joshua Thurwell (2-41), Andy Ward (2-45) and Kieron Holliday (2-25).
Methley’s hopes of victory were soon in tatters as they lost four early wickets. Although Richard Smart hit 17, Ward 24 and Ian Ellis 19 they were all out for 100 in the 43rd over.
Townville A went down by 185 runs at Buttershaw St Paul’s A in Division Two.
Although Ryan Kelsey and Robert Wood both claimed two wickets the hosts were able to pile up 268-5 from their 50 overs.
Townville were then all out for 83 in reply with M Hughes (26) and Emily Bradbrook (24) top scoring.
