YOUNGSTERS from Ackworth School are aiming for glory in national table tennis championships this weekend.
The school’s under 16 boys and girls teams have qualified for the finals of the English Schools’ Table Tennis Association Butterfly National Team Championship to be played at Hinckley Leisure Centre, Leicestershire, this Saturday.
More than 270 teams, all of them already county champions, set out on this journey with just 32 teams qualifying to take part in one of the eight events which make up the finals. Successes in their zone finals in January was followed by regional finals in Grantham, one of four covering the whole of the country at which both Ackworth’s teams proved dominant against every one of their opponents.
Ackworth’s boys team of Amirul Hussain, Jamie Liu, Reece Chamdal and Joshua Weatherby beat teams from Lancashire, Northamptonshire and North Yorkshire. The girls team of Mollie Patterson, Jasmin Wong, Ruby Chan and Harriet Greenwood came out on top against schools from Lancashire and Lincolnshire.
To take the final step to become Butterfly National Schools’ Champions the Ackworth boys’ team will face opponents from Ernest Bevin College (London), Budmouth College (Weymouth) and Range High School (Merseyside).
The girls will be up against Burlington Danes Academy (London), Okehampton Community College (Devon) and Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School, the current holders of the national title.
