Annual Ackworth race to be run on Easter Monday

Ackworth Road Runnners celebrated another outstanding year, with membership now in excess of 200, at the club’s annual awards evening at Burntwood Court, Brierley.

The club has been represented all over the world with runners competing in Australia, United States, throughout Europe and in numerous events nearer home.

A total of 49 ran in marathons, a huge increase on previous years.

The club has also been represented in a variety of events from park runs to obstacle races at all distances on the road and trail from 5k to ultra distances.

Major award winners were:

Handicap series winners: Simon Newton and Gemma Lund.

London Marathon first male and female: Simon Newton and Julie Morgan.

Grand Prix Series League One: 1 Richardson, 2 Rebecca Winter, 3 Darren Horobin.

Female Open League winner: Rebecca Winter.

Female Veteran’s League winner: Liane Warren.

Male Veterans League winner: Trevor Nichol.

Grading Awards: 1 Terry Forrest, 2 Simon Newton.

Most Improved runner: Gemma Lund by a massive 6.79 per cent and a 15.47 per cent increase over two years.

After its successful reintroduction last year the Ackworth half marathon will be held again later this month.

It will be on a revised undulating route through Wentbridge, Darrington and East Hardwick.

The race will start from the Water Tower Event Field, Pontefract Road, on Easter Monday, March 28.
