PONTEFRACT pool player Darren ‘Dynamite’ Appleton was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the World Pool Masters in Gibraltar yesterday (Sunday).
Appleton, who had reached the final of the tournament three times in the previous nine years, made an excellent fightback to beat Earl Strickland (United States) in the first round.
Appleton looked in trouble when he trailed 6-3 but he showed tremendous grit and determination to win the next five matches and clinch an 8-6 victory.
In the quarterfinals, Appleton faced another American Shane Van Boening who beat England’s Daryl Peach 8-2 in the first round.
Van Boening defeated Appleton 8-4 to reach the semi-finals where he overcame Scotland’s Jayson Shaw.
Van Boening lost 8-4 in the final to Dutchman Niels Feijen who lifted his second World Masters title following his victory in the tournament’s 2013 final.
