PONTEFRACT Athletics Club is appealing for funding from the business community or anyone else who is able to help with donations towards the cost of athletics facilities at the Kings School where the club does its athletics training.

The Kings School does not have any funds to provide the facilities which are required and the existing facilities are in very poor condition.

Pontefract Athletics Club was founded by Cyril Jones (pictured) in January, 2010.

Cyril has been involved in athletics for many years. He is the club chairman and he is one of four qualified athletics coaches at the Pontefract club, who give their time on a voluntary basis to develop athletics in this area.

The club currently has 43 junior members, aged 8 to 16, and about 35 of these are attending athletics training at the Kings School on a weekly basis.

The club urgently needs a proper runway with a polymeric surface for the long jump facility. A quotation of £7,100 has been given for this work by a specialist contractor and this is the top priority at present.

In the longer term, if more funding can be obtained, the club hopes to provide facilities for javelin (approximate cost £7,000), shot putt (approximste cost £5,000) and a throwing cage for discus and hammer (approximate cost £18,000).

Pontefract Athletics Club would be very grateful if any company or individual is able to help with the cost of the facilities.

Money can be paid into the bank account of Pontefract Athletics Club at the Yorkshire Bank, Ropergate, Pontefract.

The account number is 16051343 and the sort code is 05-06-71.

If anyone would like any further information about the proposed athletics facilities, Mr Jones would be pleased to hear from them and he can be contacted by telephone on 01977-702986 or by e-mail on
