KNOTTINGLEY SYD Ringside Boxing Club’s Popi Burton (pictured) was in outstanding form against Macclesfield’s Beth Campbell in a clash between two British schoolgirl champions in Macclesfield on Friday.

From the first bell, the crowd knew it would be a fascinating contest.

Campbell, who had a six inch height advantage, used long jabs to try to prevent Knottingley High School pupil Burton scoring points.

However, Burton took control after landing a big right hand punch.

Burton continued to dominate in the second round.

However, Campbell rallied in the final round and put in good combinations.

Campbell accidentally clipped Burton’s eye with an elbow but the Knottingley girl bounced back to land strong punches to the head and body.

Burton won the bout on a majority points decision after giving her best-ever display.

Burton will fight Leicester boxer A Mosley when SYD Ringside stage their first tournament of 2012 at Kellingley Social Club this evening (Friday). Tickets cost £10 and are available on the door.

Three other SYD boxers will be action at tonight’s tournament which will feature 16 bouts including a Yorkshire title fight.

Casey Ponsonby will take part in his first skills bout, Airedale boxer Josh Milner will aim to put on another crowd-pleasing performance against Doncaster’s C Kelsall and the classy Sam McLean takes on experienced Hartlepool fighter J Winspear.

Milner was an unlucky loser in the Yorkshire Schoolboys Championships at Havercroft.

He gave an excellent performance but did not get the decision from the judges.
