District’s top bowlers battle it out in annual festival

There is a feast of top-class bowls on the cards this weekend when Castleford and District Crown Green Bowling Association, which is celebrating its centenary year, stages the finals of its annual bowls festival.

The finals, sponsored by McTigue’s Funeral Directors, are at Pontefract Bowling Club on Saturday and Sunday.

The ladies individual and gents pairs competition finals are on Saturday and the ladies pairs, gents individual and mixed pairs finals will be held on Sunday.

All players should arrive at least 15 minutes before start time. Dress code applies.

The draw for the finals is:


Ladies individual (2pm start): Amanda Hagen v Nicola Portman, Pat Walton v Nicola Eustace, Lyn Dye v Lisa Thompson, Maureen Chambers v Pat Stewart.

Gents pairs (6pm start): Steve Portman & Ryan Lloyd v Jeff Shipley & Neil Richardson, Dennis Hogg & John Swales v David Dalton & Michael Wood, Robert Lloyd & Stuart Thompson v Jake Durham & Danny Revell, Ted Parker & Paul Baddeley v Chris Young & Bob Cheney.

Association president Dennis Metcalfe said: “Many kind, dedicated people have given a big part of their lives for this association and for them and all members past, present and future we must ensure its continuation.

“In fact, if we are really to succeed, we not only must ensure its continuation but we must ensure its expansion.”

Meanwhile, Glasshoughton A take on Castleford A in Castleford and District Crown Green Bowling Association’s Hospice Cup final at Ferrybridge BC next Monday (July 8, 6.30pm start).

Latest Ladies League placings are (all played eight matches): Ossett Flying Horse 972, Castleford 819, Garforth Rec 721, Methley 721, Pontefract 666.

Castleford and District Veterans Bowling Association came out on top against Wakefield in Friday’s inter-district match.

Castleford won the home leg at Pontefract 154-143 and trounced their opponents 1567-114 in the away leg at Wakefield BC 157-114, giving them an aggregate victory of 311-257.
