TWO ATHLETES from Able2 Pontefract Special Olympics competed in the European Down Syndrome Open Swimming Championships in Southampton.
Thomas Raddings, 18, of Ackworth won gold in 200 metres freestyle - taking 19 seconds off his personal best time - gold in 50 metres freestyle and bronze in 50 metres backstroke.
Sarah Shutt, 42, of Featherstone won gold in 25 metres breaststroke and 50 metres backstroke and silver in 25 metres freestyle, 25 metres backstroke and 25 metres butterfly.
Team coach Terry Raddings said: “This was an outstanding performance. I am very proud of them both.”
Thomas and Sarah have both been invited to a Down Syndrome Swimming Team GB training camp in Nottingham later this month hoping for selection to compete in Paris at the end of October.
Able2 Pontefract Special Olympics is affiliated to Special Olympics Great Britain. It aims to increase participation in disability sport, offering coaching and competitive opportunities in sport for people with learning disabilities.
Currently, it offers swimming, boccia, new age kurling, table tennis, equestrian and athletics.
