Hanson quickly back in groove after injury lay-off

Veteran Alan Hanson made a successful return from injury as YMCA A beat Knottingley B 10-0 in the Castleford, Pontefract and District Table Tennis League.

Hanson beat all his three opponents, albeit closely in the case of brothers Neil and David Cooper, both over five evenly contested sets.

He went on to beat Bob McNaught over four sets.

Peter Hugill beat Neil Cooper and McNaught over three sets each.

He encountered strong resistance from David Cooper but managed to win in the fifth set.

Rob Connell achieved the best results on the night, beating Neil Cooper over three sets, the latter going to deuce, McNaught easily over three and David Cooper over three, the first and third sets going to deuce in a very close encounter.

Hugill and Connell rounded off YMCA A’s win by beating the Cooper brothers over four sets in the doubles.

YMCA B and YMCA A drew 5-5 in a thrilling match.

YMCA B’s in-form Chris Inman beat Connell over three sets and Hugill over five closely contested sets, having lost the first two.

Graham Wylie defeated Connell narrowly over three sets, the first two going to deuce.

Wylie lost the first two sets to Hugill but rallied to take the next three and victory in the final set on deuce.

YMCA B’s John Keegan lost to Connell who proved too good over three sets but he defeated Hugill over four sets, the latter going to deuce.

All of YMCA B’s players lost to man of the match Steve Morris who beat Inman over three sets, Wylie convincingly over three, and Keegan over four, after narrowly losing the first set.

Inman and Keegan contested the doubles with Connell and Hugill in an attempt to achieve the overall victory but were unable to do so, losing over five sets to two players determined to achieve a draw on the night.

C Station A conceded their Knock-out Cup preliminary round game against YMCA E, due to non availability of players.

YMCA D are the league’s only remaining unbeaten team this season, with four wins from four games.

They are three points clear of YMCA C, YMCA A and YMCA B.

YMCA E are in fifth spot, one place above Knottingley A.

C Station B, C Station A and Knottingley B are still looking for their first points.
