KNOTTINGLEY SYD Ringside Boxing Club’s Popi Burton won a third successive national title with a massive points win over Derby’s Autumn Goodwin.
After training hard throughout the summer and shedding half a stone, Popi had to put weight back on to step up a weight to get a match against Goodwin who has won two national titles and had previously beaten Popi twice.
Popi (pictured) was full of confidence after winning her last 10 fights including a victory over the Australian champion. However, she faced a tough task after losing twice to the Derby girl who is a strong, relentless puncher.
Popi’s extra training paid off with her hit and move style working a treat. She took charge to win the fight with great ease after boxing a perfect fight.
Three SYD Ringside boxers - Castleford’s Josh Whittaker, Eggborough’s Billy Baker and Pontefract’s Kurt Jackson - were in action at Hull against opponents from St Paul’s Boxing Academy.
Ten-year-old Whittaker competed in only his second skills fight against George Cochran. Josh, who is growing in confidence, boxed brilliantly, using his long jab and body punches to take control of the fight.
Baker, who is also aged ten, boxed a good three rounds against his opponent.
Eleven-year-old Jackson is one of the SYD Ringside’s best-ever prospects.
He has already taken part in three contests this year, winning two and losing the other on a controversial decision. He boxed extremely well to beat his Hull opponent with superb hand speed and work rate.
SYD Ringside host their next boxing tournament at Kellingley Club on Friday, February 8, when there will be bouts involving SYD’s Josh Whittaker, Billy Baker, Kurt Jackson, Casey Ponsonby, Harry Free, Sam Allen, Josh Milner, Liam Whittaker, Sam McLean and Popi Burton who will have a rematch against Autum Goodwin. SYD are looking for sponsors for the show. Tickets go on sale this week at Kellingley Club.
