Local weightlifter Kobain Riley became the British development class school year four champion at Alfreton Arts College in Derbyshire.

Kobain successfully completed all six of his snatch and clean and jerk attempts in his first competition to post a solid 25k total in his first major match

Nine-year-old Kobain has been training successfully through the club partnership formed between Featherstone Weightlifting Club and Wakefield College Weightlifting Club at both venues for around 12 months.

He is coached by proud dad and former British medallist Martyn Riley and is reaping the rewards of his training.

Martyn said: “Kobain tries really hard to do his best and puts everything into his training. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

In September, club member Nick Hall will be competing at the world masters championships in the over 50 age group and both clubs will have several lifters competing throughout the year at regional championships and national ones. Mark Wager, Paul Sheen and Nick Hall will be defending titles.

Anyone interested in having a go at this Olympic sport at either or both clubs can contact Allan Whitworth at Featherstone Weightlifting Club on 01977 794176 or Mark Helme at Wakefield College WLC on 07769682667. Both clubs are also on Facebook.
