Marathon man is in great Nick

NICK Kennett of Pontefract Athletics Club had a superb run in Sunday’s Virgin London Marathon.

Nick clocked three hours, eight minutes 39 seconds for the classic 26.2 miles distance, which was comfortably inside the automatic qualifying time for next year’s London Marathon. His time was also a Pontefract club record for men over 40.

Club chairman Cyril Jones (pictured) also had a solid run. Now competing in the men’s over 65 category, Cyril completed the course in four hours, 40 minutes, five seconds.

In Saturday’s opening Track and Field League fixture at York, David Kidd finished second in the senior men’s 800 metres in 2:37.92, second in the 3,000 metres in 11:19.12, seventh in the 200 metres in 29.23 and eighth in the 100 metres in 14.26.

Christine McCarthy finished third in the senior ladies 3,000 metres in 12:07.67.

William Carter finished third in the under 17 men’s javelin with 15.55 metres and fifth in the shot putt with 5.81 metres.

Lewis Schofield finished third in the under 15 boys discus with 18.12 metres.

Maria Schofield came fourth in the under 13 girls 70 metres hurdles in 15.53 seconds and Cameron Howes was sixth in the under 11 boys long jump with 3.23 metres.

Michael Flaherty finished fourth out of 108 in Saturday’s Pontefract Park Run over five kilometres in 19 minutes, two seconds. His time was a new Pontefract club record for men over 50.
