MARIA Schofield (pictured) gave Pontefract Athletics Club an excellent start to the third West Yorkshire Track and Field match at Cleckheaton.
In the first track event of the evening, Maria took the lead just before the bell in the under 11 girls 600 metres.
In the last lap, she gradually increased the lead and crossed the finish line in impressive style for her first victory on the track in club athletics.
Her winning time of two minutes 1.47 seconds set a new Pontefract club record, knocking more than four seconds off the previous record, which had lasted for 10 years.
She collected seven points for her first place in the 600 metres and a further three points for finishing fourth in the shot putt with 4.53 metres to move into second place in the individual points table for under 13 girls.
Lewis Schofield finished sixth in the under 13 boys long jump with 3.81 metres, Emily Carter came sixth in the under 13 girls shot putt with 5.32 metres and Cameron Howes was sixth in the under 11 boys 75 metres in 12 .72 seconds.
