Maria Schofield of Pontefract Athletics Club produced a personal best throw of 42.49 metres to win the junior girls (under 15) hammer competition in Sunday’s West Yorkshire Schools Track and Field Championships at Cleckheaton.

The performance moved Maria into sixth position on the UK rankings for the event and confirmed her selection for West Yorkshire Schools in the English Schools Championships to be held next month at Gateshead.

Cameron Howes finished second in the junior boys high jump with a personal best of 1.56 metres and Will Carter was another Pontefract athlete to produce a personal best when he threw 35.77 metres to finish second in the senior boys javelin.

Callum Brain came second in the intermediate boys shot putt with 10.86 metres and Amy Brain was second in the junior girls long jump with 4.19 metres.

Alex Hitchen ran well in the junior boys 800 metres, improving his best time to two minutes 19.69 seconds and Will Redmond clocked 12.18 seconds in the senior boys 100 metres.

In last Wednesday’s West Yorkshire Track and Field League meeting at Cleckheaton, Jasmine Bate won theunder 13 girls high jump with 1.31 metres.

Cameron Howes was second in the under 15 boys long jump with 4.70 metres.

He was also second in the shot putt with 6.67 metres and at the end of this third match of the season, Cameron was in first position in the individual points table in the under 15 boys age group.

Caitlin Howes finished third in the under 11 girls shot putt with 4.88 metres, Emily Plimmer came third in the under 13 girls 800 metres in two minutes 38.52 seconds and Will Carter was third in the under 20 men’s shot putt with 9.23 metres.

At the end of this third match, Pontefract Athletics Club were in fifth position out of the eight clubs in the Premier Division of the West Yorkshire League.
