Newton crowned association’s top champion

CRAIG Newton (pictured) won Castleford and District Crown Green Bowling Association’s final competition of the season - the Champion of Champions tournament - at Pontefract Bowling Club on Monday evening.

Spectators were treated to excellent bowling as eight of the association’s champions this season battled it out for the title.

Ian Lewis (gents individual winner) defeated junior champion Darryl Harrap 21-19 and Rob Lloyd (YMCA winner) overcame Karen Portman (ladies individual winner) 21-11.

Craig Newton (gents festival winner) beat Charlotte Holmes (junior runner up) 21-11 and Lyn Dye (YMCA winner) defeated Amanda Hagen (ladies festival winner) 21-13.

In the semi-finals, Lloyd turned the tables on Lewis, who had pipped him for the gents individual title, by defeating him 21-17. In the other semi, Newton beat Dye 21-11.

In a close final, Lloyd pulled ahead to lead 13- 8 but Newton won the jack and hit back to snatch a 14-13 advantage.

Lloyd levelled at 14-14 but Newton then took a 20-14 lead before eventually winning 21-15.

Positions in the ladies handicap tournament: Garforth Rec played 6, points 683; Ossett Flying Horse played 5, points 603; Allerton 5-587; Castleford 5-567; Savile 5-567; Methley 5-562; Pontefract 5-547.

Castleford and District Veterans Bowling Association’s Len Pickersgill Team cup final between Queens Park A and Rothwell A will be played at Sherburn Bowling Club tomorrow (1.30pm start).
