Pontefract Athletics Club’s Maria Schofield was in outstanding form at the final West Yorkshire Track and Field League meeting of the season at Wakefield.
Maria won the under 17 ladies hammer throw, setting a West Yorkshire League record with 47.37 metres. She also won the discus event with 27.19 metres
Isabelle Stones won the under 13 girls shot putt with 7.61 metres and she was also third in the discus with 12.51 metres.
Erin Shillito won the under 11 girls shot putt with 4.48 metres.
Robert Bate won the under 17 men’s high jump with an excellent personal best of 1.70 metres and Callum Eastwood won the under 11 boys 75 metres in 11.71 seconds.
Andrew Clegg came third in the senior men’s shot putt with 8.08 metres and he was also third in the hammer with 17.04 metres.
Will Carter had three second place finishes at the meeting in the under 20 men’s age group. These came in the 400 metres (58.99), hammer (21.02 metres) and shot putt (9.91 metres).
Pontefract Athletics Club finished fifth out of the eight clubs in the Premier Division at the end of the season.
Will Carter won the gold medal for finishing the season with most points in the under 20 men’s age group and Callum Eastwood won the gold medal for most points in the under 11 boys age group. Isabelle Stones (under 13 girls), Luke Shillito (under 13 boys) and Cameron Howes (under 15 boys) were all bronze medal winners.
In the final match of the season in the North of England senior league at Cleckheaton, on Saturday, Will Carter won the 110 metres hurdles in 21.0 seconds, but his best performance came in the discus, where he finished second, setting a club record of 29.89 metres. He was also third in the shot putt with 8.89 metres and third in the long jump with 5.49 metres.
Richard Howes was second in the javelin with exactly 36 metres and second in the high jump with 1.45 metres. Robert Bate was third in the triple jump with 10.71 metres. Christine McCarthy came third in the women’s 3,000 metres in 12 minutes, 43.6 seconds.
Pontefract Athletics Club finished fifth out of the seven clubs in Division Four East Central and ended their first season in this league in fifth place.
Following his outstanding performance at the English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead last month, where he finished fourth in the junior boys high jump with a personal best of 1.78 metres, Cameron Howes was selected, along with Maria Schofield, to represent Yorkshire in the Northern Inter Counties Track and Field Championships at Hull last Sunday.
Cameron won his heat in the under 15 boys 80 metres hurdles in 13.5 seconds and finished fifth overall.
In a joint under 15/under 17 boys high jump, he was the highest placed under 15 boy and fifth overall with 1.70 metres.
Maria finished fifth in the under 17 ladies hammer with a throw of just over 43 metres.
