Pontefract athletes win 23 medals

Athletes from Pontefract Athletics Club were in top form at last weekend’s West Yorkshire Track and Field Championships at Cleckheaton.

They came away with a total of 23 medals, featuring seven gold, five silver and 11 bronze.

Isabelle Stones won the gold medal in the under 11 girls shot putt, setting a club record of 6.05 metres.

She was slightly down on her best form in the long jump, but still came away with the silver medal with a best jump of 3.90 metres. Isabelle also won the silver medal in the 75 metres with a time of 11.31 seconds.

Cameron Howes won the under 13 boys high jump gold medal with a clearance of 1.40 metres and his father Richard won the senior men’s javelin with a very good throw of 35.48 metres.

Robert Bate won the under 15 boys high jump with 1.40 metres and Callum Brain was the gold medallist in the under 17 men’s shot putt with 10.69 metres.

Sophie Gilbert won the under 20 ladies long jump with 3.69 metres and she also won the shot putt with 5.04 metres.

One of the outstanding performances of the day came from Emily Plimmer, who won the silver medal in the under 11 girls 600 metres, setting a club record of one minute 53.27 seconds.

Emily took the lead with half a lap to go and had a lead of about four metres at the start of the finishing straight, but was overtaken less than a metre from the line by the outstanding Natalie Groves from Spenborough AC, who also won the 75 metres sprint.

Emily also won the silver medal in the shot putt with 5.60 metres and the bronze medal in the long jump with 3.68 metres.

Matthew Tam-McMillan won the silver medal in the under 11 boys 75 metres, clocking 11.29 seconds.

Sophie Gilbert won bronze medals in the under 20 ladies 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres to add to her two gold medals, giving her a total of six medals at the championships.

Other bronze medal winners were Gianni Tam-McMillan (under 13 boys high jump and discus), Robert Bate (under 15 boys 100 metres and 200 metres), Sam Schofield (under 11 boys shot putt) and Richard Howes (senior men’s shot putt).

Will Carter won the bronze medal in the under 20 men’s decathlon in the Yorkshire Combined Events Championships, which were held in conjunction with the West Yorkshire Track and Field Championships.

Will recorded 3,996 points for the 10 events. He achieved personal bests in the 110 metres hurdles (19.62 seconds), pole vault (2.52 metres) and 1500 metres (5:03.81).

On the road running side, Andrew Masterman had an outstanding run in the Great North Run, finishing 99th out of more than 40,000 in 78 minutes 1 second.

His time was a club record for senior men as well as men over 40 and over 45.

In the Tholthorpe 10K, Scott Daly finished 17th out of 235 in 39 minutes 19 seconds. Faye Banks came third in the women’s race in 42- 17 with Christine McCarthy 6th in 43-56.
