Christine McCarthy of Pontefract Athletics Club was in outstanding form in last Sunday’s Leeds Abbey Dash 10K.

The race included the UK 10K championships and had a field of 12,000 runners, which made it a very high quality event. Christine finished as the fourth woman over 50 in a very impressive 41 minutes four seconds. This was 86.89 per cent of the world record for somebody of her age and gender and this is the highest percentage ever achieved by a Pontefract athlete on the World Masters Age Grading Calculator since the club was formed in March, 2010.

Scott Daly was also in good form. He was near to his personal best with 37 minutes 42 seconds.

In Saturday’s Pontefract Park Run, James Capon from Pontefract Athletics Club finished second out of 189, just losing out by one second to Simon Newton of Barnsley Harriers. In Sunday’s West Yorkshire Cross Country League fixture at West Park playing fields, Leeds, Emily Plimmer had another outstanding run to finish fifth out of 56 in the under 11 girls race. Her performance was all the more impressive considering that she is only nine years old and will still be in the under 11 age group next year.

Reilley Blanckensee had his first cross country race for the club and he finished 35th out of 62 in the under 11 boys race.

Faye Banks had another good run in the senior women’s race, finishing 17th out of 79, and Amy Brain came 30th out of 64 in the under 13 girls race.

In Saturday’s Northern Athletics Indoor Open Meeting at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, Sophie Gilbert set two club records in the under 20 ladies age group, clocking 8.78 seconds for the 60 metres and 21.08 for the 150 metres.

Cameron Howes won his heat in the under 13 boys 60 metres and was the second fastest overall in his age group, setting a club record of 8.97 seconds. Amy Brain also set a club record in the under 15 girls 600 metres with one minute 55.20 seconds.

Isabelle Stones competed in the under 13 girls age group as there were no events for under 11s. Despite this, Isabelle competed well. She clocked a new club record of 9.44 seconds for under 11 girls in the 60 metres and also produced a good long jump of 3.87 metres.
