Pontefract star James Willstrop’s outstanding performances in Seattle at the World Championships have been rewarded with a dramatic rise in December’s world rankings.
After beating world number one Mohammed el Shorbagy and world number five Miguel Rodriguez to reach the semi finals in Seattle, Willstrop has soared from 24 to 15 in the rankings.
His world ranking is likely to rise again in January.
He continued his fine form in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open where he beat in-form Australian Ryan Cuskelly 3-1 before losing 3-1 to the new world champion Gregory Gaultier (France).
Willstrop was due to represent England in the World Team Championships in Cairo but after several nations, including France, the USA and England withdrew for security reasons, the championships have been postponed.
They had originally been scheduled to be held in Kuwait but had been switched at short notice to Egypt.
