PONTEFRACT sisters Emma and Rachel Grayson won the final mirror open meeting at Beaver Sailing Club, Sykehouse, near Goole.
It was the last of the northern travellers series in which mirror sailors compete at different sailing clubs in the Northern area.
Their success at their home club sealed victory for them in the overall series and rounded off a magnificent year for the two girls.
Emma, 15, and Rachel, 13, who both attend Pontefract’s Kings School, have been sailing together for the last two and a half years and became members of the junior national mirror sailing squad in October, 2010.
They represented Great Britain in the European Championships in Ireland last year and in the World Championships in Australia this year and are currently junior girl champions in both competitions.
Thy competed in this summer’s mirror national championships on the South coast, near Falmouth. Out of the 78 boats that competed - both junior and adult - Emma and Rachel came fifth overall and were the first lady helm and crew in the competition.
Rachel said: “Sailing has been a fantastic sport to take up. People think it is expensive to sail, but to learn it is like any other sport.
“It is healthy and if you do travel you meet some great people who you keep in touch with all the time. Beaver Sailing Club has been like a second home to us, it is brilliant.”
Emma said: “We have been Asda athletes this year, associated with the Pontefract store. We did two fund raisers, each time rigging our boat “Fat Buoy” outside the store. It was nice to tell people about our boat and experiences”.
If anyone is interested in the sport of sailing they can find details about the well-established Beaver Sailing Club, which is situated just off the M62, on the club’s website.
Emma and Rachel are grateful to their sponsors, Asda, Bumps and Scratches, of Featherstone, and Fitness Base Gym for their continued support.
