Phil Cawser (YMCA D) won Castleford, Pontefract and District Table Tennis League’s Closed Championship singles title.

Cawser, the league’s star player this season, continued his long unbeaten run by beating teenager Bailey Pye (YMCA E) in three sets in the final.

The best final of the first night was the doubles where the experienced duo Peter Hugill and Rob Connell (YMCA A) beat the young team of Pye and Daniel Ferguson (YMCA E)over five close fought sets.

Ian Instone (YMCA D) won the over 60s handicap competition, beating last year’s winner Keith Lumb of Ferrybridge C Station A by one point.

With the addition of the handicaps, Instone won 31 -30.

Instone went on to win the main handicap tournament the following week.

He beat Neil Cooper (Knottingley C) by a clear margin. Instone’s recent return to form after a poor season clearly upset the handicapping.

A doubles match again provided a thrilling final.

In the draw doubles, players are partnered at random with anyone who has entered.

Pye and partner Keith Lumb brought off a remarkable turn around against Hugill and Bailey’s normal partner Ferguson.

Hugill and Ferguson won the first two sets and looked as though they would win in three.

However Pye and Lumb fought back to take the next three sets to win the match.
