SEVEN-year-old Abigail Bregman is pictured with the silver medal she won in the kata section at the British Open Shotokan Kyogi Karate Championships.

Kata consists of a series of set karate moves which have to be executed with speed, accuracy and power.

Brown belt Abigail, a member of North Featherstone-based Sengoku Karate-Do Club, competed against martial artists from all over Britain and against many different styles of karate.

She beat older children and black belts on her way to a silver medal.

It is only the third competition she has entered and she has twice won medals.

Abigail, who hopes to take her black belt next year, is now looking forward to her next competition in Hull.

Sengoku teaches traditional karate at North Featherstone Junior and Infant School on Tuesdays and Thursdays (5.30 to 7.30pm) and is suitable for all ages and abilities.

There are also mixed martial arts classes at Xtreme Health and Fitness, Sharlston. For further details contact Nicki Harrison on 07538861438.
