Pontefract kept alive their Premier Squash League play-off hopes by beating Birmingham 3-2 at Stuart Road in a crucial match last night (Tuesday).
The match went to 1-1 and then 2-2 with James Willstrop clinching victory for the home side by beating Joel Makin 3-1.
Willstrop is unbeaten in the Premier League this season and was keen to preserve his record after his disappointing loss to Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet in the British Open.
Laura Massaro, who was crowned British Open champion, was unavaillable for Pontefract and and was replaced by Fiona Moverley. She lost 3-2 to Birmingham’s Sarah Jane Perry, runner up to Massaro at the British Open.
Pontefract’s Patrick Rooney beat Jan Van Den Herrewegen 3-1 and Taminder Gata-Aura defeated Joshua Owen 3-1 but Evan Williams lost 3-0 to Peter Creed.
The result leaves Birmingham bottom of Division A with no more matches to play.
Just 10 points divide the other four teams ahead of next week’s final matches when Pontefract host Nottingham on Monday night.
