REIGNING champions NEW College Pontefract retained their Varsity Challenge title with a hard-fought victory over rivals Wakefield College.

The two teams went head-to-head in a full day of action that comprised various sports played out at venues across the district but it was the students from Pontefract who edged the encounter 8-6.

NEW College’s defence of their crown started slowly with a defeat in golf but the girls’ netball team levelled matters with a 56-0 success at Thornes Park.

Gemma Pearson, Nicola Olbison, Amy Blatherwick, Ben Jones and Abby Orme produced fine performances as the NEW College badminton team won 25-8.

The mixed hockey team lost 5-1 before the ladies football team, inspired by Jade Pennock, Amy Schofield and Shauna Pert, won 4-3 at Pontefract Park.

The third football team lost 4-2 and there were mixed results for the NEW College first and second teams as they won and lost on penalties respectively.

Wakefield College triumphed in the five-a-side competition at College Grove to keep them in the running but the Pontefract youngsters won in both squash and boccia.

A defeat in the dance competition was cancelled out by a 51-41 victory in basketball, Liam Holdsworth and Mikey Johnson putting in impressive displays. Wakefield College tied the competition 6-6 thanks to their triumph in ten pin bowling but the trophy stayed in Pontefract thanks to victories for the ladies and men’s rugby league teams.

Hannah Thorpe led from the front and scored two tries in the ladies’ 24-8 win while the men prevailed 14-4 with Leo Peat, Arnold Mawere and Gareth Olliman crossing and Ben Thompson adding a conversion.
