Castleford Tigers confirm departure of rugby boss Jon Wells
Director of rugby Jon Wells is the latest member of Castleford Tigers' backroom staff to leave the club.
The 42-year-old former Castleford, Wakefield Trinity and London Broncos winger has been in the post three years and also works as a pundit for Sky Sports.
A brief statement, released on Thursday afternoon, said: "Castleford Tigers today announce that Jon Wells will be stepping down as the club’s director of rugby on May 30, 2021.
"Wells gave his period of notice at the end of March this year and has been with the Tigers since March of 2018. In that time, he has worked hard with both the club’s coaches and the board of directors.
The club would like to thank Jon for his service over the past three years and wish him well for the future."
A week before this season began, coach Daryl Powell revealed he will be leaving Tigers at the end of the 2021 campaign.
Powell was this week confirmed as Warrington Wolves' new coach, on a three-year contract beginning next season.
Powell's assistant Danny Orr moved on last year and is now on the staff at Salford Red Devils.
Meanwhile, Powell's appointment at Warrington has been welcomed by the man he will replace, Steve Price. Price will be taking his family back to Australia when his contract runs out at the end of the year.
"It's a great acquisition for our club," Price said of his successor.
"He has built a strong reputation in the British game over the past eight years, especially at Castleford.
"It's great the club has got on the front foot so everyone is clear about 2022 and, mostly importantly, the players have an understanding on where they will be too. He's a well respected coach in the game."
Warrington full-back Stefan Ratchford said Powell's appointment "has not been spoken about out of respect for Pricey."
He said: "It got announced after round two so we're looking at another 30-plus games before we get to that.
"It's done and the club can prep' moving forward, but as a playing group, we're fully focused on 2021."
