Featherstone Rovers suffered a demoralising 14-try defeat to Leeds Rhinos in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.

The defending champions took control of the game from the opening whistle and powered to a comprehensive 72-0 victory. Ellie Oldroyd, Fran Goldthorp, Adaoha Akwiwu and Hanna Butcher all scored two tries as Leeds secured their second win of the season.

Orla McCallion, Tara Moxon, Caitlin Beevers, Chloe Kerrigan, Sophie Robinson and Zoe Hornby also stamped their names on the scoresheet. Featherstone did have a few positive spells; mainly in the second half.

Natalie Gilmour’s half-time message seemed to ignite a spark however, their resistance didn’t last long as Leeds finished the game strong.

With their opening games of the season coming against Castleford and Leeds, this was never going to be an easy task for Featherstone.

Speaking after the game, Featherstone captain Jess Hammond said: “We’re a new team. We haven’t played for 16 months, we have been working and trying to train through zoom.

"There’s a lot of new staff that have taken over and a lot of new girls that we have brought through from other teams and [Featherstone] Lions so we’re still finding our feet.

“We’re still getting used to playing with each other.”
