Already a British Junior Open winner at U15 level, his main target this season will be to win the U17 Open Championship, which would establish him as the best player of his age in the world.

Pontefract’s James Willstrop is England’s most successful junior and now Todd has won every age group British national title he is on course to equal Willstrop’s achievements that culminated in him winning the World U19 Championship.

Todd was untroubled in Nottingham, dropping only one game in five matches, that in the final against Lewis Anderson (Warwickshire).

Several other Pontefract juniors acquitted themselves with credit. Fearne Copley finished third in the U11; Amy Royle fifth in the U17; and Layla Johnson seventh U17, all three girls a year young.

Ireland’s Denis Gilevskiy won the U17 British title after preparing at Pontefract, playing for the club during his stay in the Yorkshire Premier League.
