PONTEFRACT lost 5½-2½ at Hull in Yorkshire Chess League Division Two.
Steve Spencer gained a draw but Chris Roche then lost and Adam Routledge’s unbeaten run for Pontefract also ended.
Peter Cooper continued his winning run. He was two pawns up in bishop rook ending and that proved good enough to record Pontefracts only win.
Top board Colin Procter was a pawn up but with different coloured bishops he could only draw. Bill Pinder blundered a pawn early in the game but held out for a draw.
Pete Gray lost to good counter play while Steve Parker, who was last to finish, tried in vain to stop a pawn promotion.
The outcome of Pontefract’s next match at bottom club Bradford is crucial in their bid to avoid relegation.
