Castleford CC failed to recover from a poor start as they lost by four wickets in a low scoring Yorkshire ECB Premier League contest at Savile Park.
After being put in on a wicket made tricky by recent heavy rain, home team Cas were soon in trouble at 15-3 with Charles Finan, Luke Frankland and Dominic Sharp all dismissed cheaply.
County player David Wanwright (11) and Jack Shutt (22) briefly raised hopes, but when both were out half of the home batsmen were back in the dressing room with only 49 on the board.
James Sykes and John Randerson were also out with the score on 49 and although there were late runs from Freddie Collins (13) and Jarran Cook (16) Castleford were all out for 90.
If Barnsley thought they would have an easy task they were in for a surprise as their batsmen also found it tough going. They did reach 63-2 when opener Matthew Wilson had to retire hurt on 24, but from that point limped over the line rather then reached their small target emphatically.
They lost six wickets before getting home in the 26th over with former Yorkshire player Azeem Rafiq hitting 22 and wickets going to Cook (3-16), Wainwright (2-26) and Shutt (1-22).
The result left Castleford fourth from bottom while Barnsley are third from top.
Castleford Seconds and Malton played out an entertaining low scoring draw in the York Senior League’s Division Three North.
The game ebbed and flowed as Castleford posted a 162-6 score with Edward Cole (54) top scoring and David Tomlinson hitting 41.
In pursuit, Malton were in with a sniff of victory as Josh Berry (50) got them within striking distance, but they ran out of time as they fell 12 runs short, finishing on 150-8 with Jaskaran Dutter taking 3-36 and Oran White 3-34.
Jack Young scored 19 runs and took two wickets as Castleford under 11s beat Pledwick, making 44-5 to their opponents’ 41-5.
