Justin Carney reminded fans of his try scoring power with a first half hat-trick as Castleford Tigers beat York City Knights 62-6 in their pre-season warm-up at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

The player of the year from last season opened his account for the new campaign with some powerful running and three finishes in an opening half in which the Tigers opened up a 26-point lead in the first 28 minutes before York hit back with their only try through Kris Brining three minutes before the break.

First to score for Cas was winger Richard Owen, who had an easy task to supply the finish to a fourth minute move involving Scott Wheeldon, Liam Finn and Michael Channing.

Carney’s first try followed after Curtis Macdonald dropped Marc Sneyd’s high kick on his own line.

The Australian, playing at centre, was soon over again from Sneyd’s pass and Sneyd kicked his first conversion to make it 14-0 on 14 minutes.

Prop Craig Huby extended the lead with a simple try from Finn’s tap penalty and after Wheeldon was held up over the line the very next play saw Ben Reynolds send Carney over with his first pass after coming on as substitute full-back.

Sneyd’s third goal made it 28-0 before Cas took their foot off the gas a little and allowed York their first score near the end of the half, Brining going over with a fine individual effort straight from a scrum and Ben Hardcastle converting.

The second half started slowly before two tries in three minutes for half-back Sneyd, both converted by him, livened up affairs. The first came after a great break and offload by Oliver Holmes and the second was the result of backing up a Carney break.

Sneyd then turned provider with a great long pass to send James Clare over in the corner and Sneyd’s touchline conversion made in 44-6.

Cas cut loose now and further tries were scored by the impressive Daryl Clark, youngster Reynolds, who completed a fine move from the Tigers’ own half, and Grant Millington.

Sneyd, who was awarded the official man of the match, took his goal tally to nine with more conversions and he finished with 26 points.
