Castleford Tigers weighing up Hampshire move

Castleford Tigers are believed to be interested in signing full-back or half-back Ryan Hampshire on a season long loan from Wigan Warriors.

The Tigers need cover for half-backs Luke Gale and Ben Roberts in particular with Liam Finn allowed to join Wakefield Wildcats last week, leaving them with just the untried youngster Tom Holmes as a back up.

They have no experienced cover for full-back Luke Dorn either after Jordan Tansey also left for Wakefield midway through last season and will not be able to switch Roberts there as they did in 2015 with Finn no longer available.

Highly rated Wakefield-born Hampshire is seen as one possible solution and Wigan are open to letting him go, but only on loan as they are not believed to be interested in a permanent deal at this stage and he is still under contract.

The 20-year-old played in almost half of Wigan’s Super League games last season, scoring four tries when he was preferred to Matty Bowen, but his chances of regular starts look limited with the Warriors re-signing Sam Tomkins and George Williams and Matty Smith ahead of him at half-back.

A deal could go through this week if the clubs can agree terms.
