Daryl Powell praised his Castleford Tigers players for their performance at the Dacia Magic Weekend.
A 38-10 success against Leeds Rhinos got the Tigers back to winning ways after two defeats and the victory and winning margin were fully deserved according to the Cas head coach, who believed it was close to his team’s best performance of the season so far.
“Our energy with the ball and our go forward was superb,” said Powell.
“The forward pack was excellent. Our back three were good in terms of setting us up with a platform.
“Once we got a grip of the game I thought we did some excellent things. I think our left side was particularly creative and dangerous in the first half and our back was immense.
“Magic Weekend brings out the best in us and we started the game really well in terms of our go forward.
“We came up with a couple of errors, but I thought our go forward was awesome and our pack was great. I was really pleased with the effort and the two points.”
Powell continued: “From an attacking clarity point of view in good attacking positions we’ve still got some work to do and Saints defend in a certain way so we’ve got to be clinical to break them down this week. But I was really pleased with the performance.
“I know Leeds would say they weren’t at their best, but I thought we were really good.
“It was closer to the 80-minute performance than what we have been putting in recently which is great and we will build from that.
Powell singled out his new half-back partners Jake Trueman and Jamie Ellis for praise, the former having a hand in a number of tries and the latter’s goal kicking proving important as he landed seven goals.
He said: “Our half-backs played really well.
“We have got Luke Gale, Ben Roberts and Greg Eden missing, but I thought the boys did really well. I thought our left side was really creative thanks to Truey and I thought Jamie Ellis was really controlling. They both defended really well because Leeds always put a bit of traffic their way.”
