Supporters mark Castleford Tigers’ year of progress

Young first team stars Oliver Holmes and Daryl Clark were the big winners at the tenth Castleford Tigers Supporters Club awards night, which took place at a packed George V WMC.

The full squad was in attendance at a celebration of the Tigers’ best-ever season in the Super League, which came in the supporters’ club’s tenth anniversary year.

In an event where Powder Keg, D&R Group were executive sponsors and New Venture Driving Tuition were sponsors chief executive Steve Gill, head coach Daryl Powell and assistant coach Danny Orr gave their review of the season and four awards were handed out.

The first award went to the under 19s player of the year, with Brad Day, who made his Super League debut in the away game at Warrington, chosen. His trophy was presented by Graham Murdie, of Minerwear.

Next up was the CTSC committee player of the year, which went to Daryl Clark after a season which has seen him nominated for Super League young player of the year and in the last four for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel award. His award was presented by Wayne Pickup, of Black Swan, Normanton.

The special achievement award, presented by Steve Smith and family, of Carpet Magic, Kippax, went to Daryl Powell for the work he has done in overseeing the Tigers’ fantastic revival and for ensuring a new club culture has been formed with everybody, including the supporters.

The final award of the night was the CTSC player of the year and it went to Oliver Holmes. His trophy was presented by Daryl Powell, on behalf of Paul Asquith, Asquith’s Fish and Chips, who described the winner as “a tough player, respected by all his team-mates, who played consistently well throughout the season”.

Club captain Michael Shenton thanked fellow players and supporters,saying that he had really enjoyed playing this season and it was the best so far in his career.

The CTSC raised £798 on the night and thanked their sponsors as well as thanking the players leaving the club for the service given to the Tigers.

The next CTSC event is a Q&A past players evening, sponsored by PP Payroll Solutions Ltd, with Barry Johnson, John Joyner, Gary Stephens and Sammy Lloyd on Tuesday, October 21 at the WSTS Suite, MAH Jungle (7.45pm). Admission is £1 CTSC members and £3 non-members.
