Sheffield Eagles have secured the signing of prop forward Scott Wheeldon from Super League side Castleford Tigers.
The Eagles beat off a host of other clubs to land the experienced operator on a three-year full-time contract after he was released by Cas.
The move will be seen as a major step forward for the Eagles, with Wheeldon playing his entire career to date in Super League which included 15 appearances for Daryl Powell’s Castleford last season.
“We are thrilled to have brought Scott to Sheffield Eagles,” director of rugby Mark Aston told www.sheffieldeagles.com
“Scott’s professionalism, experience and undoubted quality will make him a great addition for this club and I cannot wait to start working with him.”
Wheeldon began his career with Hull FC and appeared for the Black and Whites in the 2006 Super League Grand Final defeat to St. Helens. He has also enjoyed spells with Hull KR and London Broncos before switching to Castleford in 2014. While at The Jungle he helped the Tigers to the Challenge Cup Final and fourth and fifth finishes in Super League.
“He has a wealth of experience and he knows what it is like to play in rugby league’s biggest games,” Aston continued.
“After chatting at length with Scott and telling him about our plans for the future I knew that he would fit right in here. He comes to me with the highest of recommendations from people I respect in the game with the likes of Daryl Powell and Liam Finn giving him glowing reports.
“Scott is a terrific player and a top class pro, he will have a massive impact both on and off the field with the club as we look to develop some very exciting young players.”
