New full-time chief executive Steve Gill faces his first big task since being appointed at the weekend as he aims to draw up a shortlist of candidates to take over from Ian Millward as Castleford Tigers head coach.
Former Cas player John Kear, now at Batley, has been installed as the bookies favourite to take over and is believed to be keen to coach his hometown team and have one more crack at Super League.
Other English candidates include Karl Harrison and Brian Noble, who was favourite for the job last time round only to miss out to Millward, while Daryl Powell’s success as Featherstone Rovers boss has not gone unnoticed and former number two to Terry Matterson at Cas Andy Hay will have his supporters.
Danny Orr may also come into the reckoning if successful as caretaker coach and would be a popular choice, although he has said he did not want the job yet until he had more coaching experience.
If Cas go down the Australian route again former Hull KR boss Justin Morgan and ex-Bradford coach Brian Smith could come into the reckoning.
