Luke Briscoe was able to celebrate beating Paul Newlove’s 1993 club record of tries in consecutive games as he scored for the 11th match in a row in a convincing 42-0 win for Featherstone Rovers at Rochdale.

The flying winger was empty handed until the 67th minute, but then went on to collect a hat-trick of tries to take his season’s tally up to 20 already in a victory that made it worthwhile for all the fans who made a difficult trip over the Pennines.

After losing to Toronto on Friday, this was an impressive way to bounce back from Rovers who showed their all-round quality, keeping their hosts scoreless as well as running in eight tries.

Harry Newman put Featherstone ahead with the opening try on seven minutes and went over again soon after.

The on-loan Leeds youngster went on to collect a first half-trick, scoring the fourth try after Josh Hardcastle had benefited from good work by Tom Holmes and Ian Hardman to cross for Rovers’ third.

With Martyn Ridyard kicking three conversions it was 22-0 at half-time.

Rochdale improved to have more of the game after the break, but Fev defended well, especially when facing three repeat sets on their own line after both sides had gone down to 12 men.

Ryan Maneely was sin-binned for a swinging arm on Hardcastle and subsequent brawl and Rovers forward Sam Brooks was also yellow carded, although he appeared to have no involvement with the incident

After withstanding the pressure Featherstone were on the attack again and stretching their lead when Ridyard dived over for a try he converted.

It was then the Briscoe story as he crossed for his record breaking try 13 minutes from time and within six minutes had two more for another hat-trick.
