SHARLSTON Rovers player Gareth Davies will be out to impress after being selected on the wing in Featherstone’s pre-season match against Bradford Bulls at Bigfellas Stadium on Sunday.

Davies (pictured) has been handed a month’s trial after giving an eye-catching display for Sharlston when they played Featherstone in a Boxing Day friendly.

Featherstone coach Daryl Powell said: “Gareth Davies will start on the wing at the weekend. He signed for Bradford as a kid so it will be an interesting game for him. He played pretty well on Boxing Day and caused us a lot of trouble. Danny Evans contacted him after that game to see if he would be interested in having a go in the professional game.

“He’s been training with us over the last couple of weeks and he’ll get an opportunity to play in the first-team this weekend.

“I think he had a spell at Featherstone when David Hobbs was here but it wasn’t for him at that time.

“Obviously, he’s seen that it could be a good opportunity for him now and probably his last opportunity to have a go in the professional game so hopefully he will grab hold of it and play really well on Sunday against the team he signed for as a junior.

“He’s on a month’s trial for him to look at us and us to look at him and see what his thoughts are and for us to see whether he has the potential to challenge people in the first-team for their places. It will be great to see him out there - he’s quite an exciting player.”
