Seventy players turned up on the first night of the Featherstone Rovers play touch rugby league tournament at Big Fellas Stadium on Monday evening.
The event is organised by the Featherstone Rovers Foundation and it will run for 10 weeks.
Laurabeth Jaggar, the club’s head of community development, said: “I am so proud of the number of teams turning up to play.
“Last Monday was the friendly rounds so the competition starts next week.
“It was really great to see both experienced and new players interacting and there was a real buzz about the night with all players in great spirits.”
Dane Weatherill, coordinator of the programme , said: “Touch rugby league incorporates all the fun stuff that makes the game great, like speed, skill and action, without the ‘ouch’ factor of the traditional format because there’s minimal contact. You literally ‘touch’ to tackle and the best thing is, anyone can play over the age of 14 - friends, family and workmates.”
People can still sign up for next Monday’s session at Big Fellas Stadium from 6.30 to 8.30pm. The cost is £3 per person.
The teams that played last Monday were Rasta’s Rockets, New Fev Warriors, Ponti Rhubarb, Boot Room Tigers, Fevolution, Inbetweeners, Knockons and the 5 Towns Tigers.
