Coach Daryl Powell hopes Featherstone’s Tetley’s Challenge Cup clash at London Broncos on Saturday will kick-start their season.

Championship favourites Rovers lost top spot in the table with successive defeats at Sheffield and York. After this weekend’s cup tie at Twickenham Stoop, they host unbeaten leaders Halifax and then visit high-flying Batley.

“We are not in the best of form and and we are looking at Saturday’s game as an opportunity to really kick-start our season,” said Powell.

“We’ve a tough block of games coming up, starting with this one. We need to improve and be more consistent in what we are delivering as a group of players and as individuals.

“It will be a tough challenge for us at London. Obviously, they are a Super League club and we are going need to be on our game.

“It will need a fair step up from us to get this job done but we’ve got to go there feeling confident.

“It should be a good opportunity for us to play in a game with no pressure on us which doesn’t happen often to this current team.

“There’s no pressure on us so we just need to relax and perform and hopefully we’ll go well.”

Powell watched London in action in their 30-6 defeat at Leeds Rhinos on Friday night.

“They are big and physical. Obviously, the wet conditions dictated a fair bit in that game but they have some smart players,” he said.

“They have people like Michael Witt and Craig Gower who are massive influences on the way that they play and Kieran Dixon on the wing is absolutely electric so you don’t want to be giving him too much space.”

Powell will be checking on centre Greg Worthington who sustained a knee injury in last Thursday’s win at Doncaster. Prop Matt James is a major doubt after picking up an injury in training on Monday.

Kyle Briggs is on the road to recovery from knee trouble.

“I’m hopeful Greg will be okay but obviously we’ll check on him throughout the week,” said Powell.

“There’s a pretty huge doubt over Matt James who has injured his knee. I’m not sure how bad that is. He did it in training on Monday night. We’ll have to check on him over the next week or so and he’ll probably need a scan.

“Kyle Briggs is getting better all the time. He was on the treadmill on Monday and hopefully he’ll be able train on Wednesday and we’ll see where he is at.”

Powell has dismissed speculation linking him with the Castleford Tigers coaching job following Ian Millward’s departure last week.

“Obviously, there’s speculation when a job comes available especially as I’m a local lad and a local coach. You expect that and there’s plenty of names being banded around,” he said.

“I’m doing a job at Featherstone and getting on with it. I want to be successful this season. There’s nothing to say really, I’m just getting on with what I’m doing.”
