Featherstone Rovers gave a magnificent account of themselves in a 24-12 defeat against London Broncos in Saturday’s Challenge Cup fourth round tie at Twickenham Stoop that was watched by 1,217 spectators.
Championship side Rovers, who knocked out Castleford Tigers and ran Wigan Warriors close in last season’s competition, pushed London Broncos all the way.
Ian Hardman’s 25th minute try put Rovers 4-0 ahead at half-time against their Super League opponents.
London hit back to lead 8-4 with two tries in four minutes from Kieran Dixon and Jamie O’Callaghan but Rovers levelled when Hardman bagged his second touchdown in the 59th minute.
The game could easily have gone either way until former Castleford Tigers player Luke Dorn gave London a decisive advantage by scoring two quick tries.
Andy Kain’s 73rd minute touchdown cut the gap to eight points but London had the last word with Dixon’s second try three minutes from time.
Skipper Liam Finn’s scoring run for Rovers ended when he failed to score.
Before the game at London, Finn had scored in 57 consecutive Featherstone matches, starting on May 29, 2011.
