Coach Jon Sharp was delighted with Featherstone’s 80-minute performance against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last Sunday.
After outscoring Castleford Tigers 28-12 in the second-half of their first pre-season match, Rovers took an 18-6 lead against their other Super League neighbours Wakefield before eventually being pipped 22-18 in the closing stages.
“I was really pleased with the performance and the level we were able to play for 80 minutes,” said Sharp.
“We had some young lads in there and they really stuck to their task well. It was a really productive game for us.
“We had Spears, Taulapapa and Hardman in the team so we had a bit more experience back from the Castleford match and I thought that showed in how we handled the game. All three blokes who came in were extremely good and certainly improved us.
“We improved in defence and attack-wise we looked better. The combination of Milner, Thackeray and Wildie looked like they were getting a bit smoother and the forward pack got us into good field position. I was pleased with Bostock and I thought Ormondroyd continued from his good display at Castleford.
“Davies was a stand-out for me. I thought he was tough and uncompromising and had lots of good skill about his game as well.
“The positive was that both teams had a really good work out. Considering the conditions, I thought the standard was pretty good.”
Sharp is pleased with the way Featherstone’s young first-teamers are continuing the progress they made at the end of last season.
“The young players impressed me with their attitude last season,” he added.
“It was a tough period for the club and very much a transition period when experienced players weren’t available for one reason or another. These guys came in and due to good form maintained their spots in the team. They’ve worked hard in the off-season and their attitude has been great and I think they are continuing their development.”
