TRIALIST Tom Hemingway will play for Featherstone Rovers in Saturday’s pre-season match against Oldham at Bigfellas Stadium (5.30 kick-off).

The 24-year-old Dewsbury-born half-back or hooker (pictured), who is having a month’s trial with Rovers, started his career at Huddersfield Giants.

He had a spell on loan at Batley Bulldogs before playing for the now defunct Blackpool Panthers last season when he equalled Jim Sullivan’s 1925 goalkicking record by converting all Blackpool’s 22 tries in a 132-0 victory over Gateshead Thunder.

Hemingway is not viewed as a Rovers replacement for stand-off Kyle Briggs who has joined Bradford Bulls.

Featherstone’s head coach Daryl Powell said: “It will be interesting to have a look at Tom. It will give us a lot more depth at half-back and at number nine

“Tom comes to us not as a result of our search for a Kyle Briggs replacement, but because we have shown that the system we have here is good at helping young players realise their potential. Other clubs were interested in Tom, but he chose us because he feels we can be good for him and consequently he can be good for us. Anyway we’ll see.”

Former Huddersfield player Greg Worthington will be given another chance to impress at stand-off against Oldham in Featherstone’s third pre-season match following their victories against Hunslet Hawks and Gateshead Thunder.

Said Powell: “All the time now we are looking at the depth of options we’ve got.

“I think Greg Worthington will turn into a player both in the centre and at six who can play outstandingly well at this level but he’s just going to need a bit more time. We will give him every opportunity to progress at six.

“We need depth at half-back, even more so with Kyle leaving. We need options at number six and I think Greg is going to be a good option for us in the halves and I want to give him as much game time as possible there.”

Saturday’s team will include first-team squad members Liam Welham, Jon Steel, Greg Worthington, Dom Dee and Jonny Grayson, plus promising young half-back Ryan Gaunt.
