RFL ‘seeking clarity’ over community game ahead of new lockdown

With the country set to go into lockdown on Thursday until December 2, rugby league was relieved to hear that elite sports played behind closed doors will not be included in the new rules.

That means the Super League campaign can conclude with a Grand Final at Hull’s KCOM Stadium on November 27.

However, the community game has also recently successfully restarted with thousands of players – juniors and open age – finally able to play for the first time since March.

An RFL spokesperson said it would be “stressing to Government, in partnership with other team sports in particular, the potential long-term damage of restrictions on participation.”

Meanwhile, Super League will meet today and tomorrow to discuss a number of issues, not least Toronto Wolfpack’s submission to be re-entered into the competition in 2021.

Their latest application has curried some favour with various club chief executives but the Super League chief executive Robert Elstone is understood to be recommending against the Canadian club returning.

Another subject on the agenda is deciding whether to end the regular season with immediate effect and introduce an expanded play-offs although support for that seemed to be waning last night.
