Rovers snatch top spot in sensational finish
Featherstone are the new Kingston Press Championship leaders after a dramatic 40-24 win over Sheffield Eagles in Wednesday’s Kingstone Press Championship top of the table clash.
They moved above Sheffield on points difference by denying them a bonus point with a converted try in the dying seconds by Will Sharp.
It means Rovers will retain the League Leaders’ Shield if they beat Hunslet Hawks in Sunday’s final league game at South Leeds Stadium.
The Eagles thought they had snatched a crucial bonus point when they recovered from 34-12 down to cut the deficit to 10 points but they lost top spot in the table when Sharp scored from Liam Finn’s high kick with just 21 seconds left and Finn added his sixth goal.
It was an amazing finish to an incident-packed game that had the 3,890 crowd on their toes from start to finish.
Tim Spears’s second minute try put Rovers ahead but the Eagles hit back to lead 12-6 thanks to tries from Quentin Laulu-Togagae and Michael Knowles.
Rovers levelled on the stroke of half-time when Matt James charged over and then took control in the second-half with touchdowns from Jonny Hepworth, Andy Kain, Ian Hardman and James Lockwood.
Sheffield set up a nail-biting finish with Laulu-Togagae’s second try and one from Matt Garside but Rovers had the vital final say when Sharp leaped highest to score from Finn’s kick.
