Wakefield Trinity boss hoping Mason Lino's injury is not serious

The half-back has joined Trinity on a three-year deal and kicked five goals from five against the Championship outfit in Wakefield’s only pre-season fixture ahead of the 2021 campaign.

Chester revealed afterwards that the player was struggling with a rib issue, but is hoping it will not prove serious with Wakefield opening their Super League campaign against Leeds Rhinos next weekend.

“We have had a few guys come up with ankles, backs and Mason had a rib problem,” said Chester.

“He is going to get a scan. We don’t know if it is an oblique or a rib injury.

“He is not in too much discomfort but you could tell against Dewsbury he didn’t really want to carry the ball and with any contact you could tell he winced.

“We are fairly confident it is not a big issue. On the whole we have come out pretty unscathed.”

Two players who could miss out on the clash with Leeds are Ryan Hampshire and Max Jowitt.

Chester explained: “We have picked up a few soft tissue injuries and there are a few guys who are touch and go for round one.

“Ryan Hampshire has gone in for a clean-up on a knee issue and Max Jowitt is touch and go for round one.

“You have got to wrap these guys in cotton wool and we have been cautious, with those two guys especially.”

Wakefield earned a 30-10 win over Dewsbury on Sunday and Chester is happy with his side’s progress after a long pre-season.

“We are happy with the progress. It has been a long pre-season, mentally more than anything,” added the Trinity chief.

“It is really good that we got a positive result against Dewsbury but it leaves us with plenty of things to try and get right.”

Chester was also impressed with some of the displays from his younger players, continuing: “There are some guys there that really put their hand up.

“I was impressed with Sam Eseh and Ollie Greensmith, he came up with a try-saving tackle.

“It is really positive and I am pleased with the young kids who came on.”
