Sporting talent rewarded at Wakefield District Sports Awards

Individuals and teams from a wide range of sports gathered at Cedar Court Hotel, Wakefield, on Monday night to receive recognition for what they’ve done in their chosen sporting field.

The annual event, hosted by Harry Gration, proved to be bigger and better than ever before.

And the BBC Look North presenter was delighted to be in attendance.

He said: “I feel very privileged to be presenting these Sports Awards. I’ve been involved for about eight years now and they get bigger and better every year.

“They’re normally run in September but even though we’ve moved them to June the response has been magnificent. I take my hat off to the people involved who’ve helped put this superb night on. The judges have had an extremely tough task of narrowing the nominees down and picking the winners on the night.”

Wakefield rugby league legend Neil Fox handed out the awards and Wakefield Wildcats head coach John Kear, part of the three-person judging panel, was also in attendance.

The awards covered a wide variety of sports, from football and rugby league to crown green bowling and hockey.

Amongst the winners were Sharlston Rovers ARLFC, who took the men’s team of the year award thanks to their performance in winning the BARLA National Cup.

Golfer Adrian Ambler took the sportsman of the year accolade, while Wakefield Harriers distance runner Julie Briscoe scooped the sportswoman of the year.
