Despite another good all-round display by David Wainwright Castleford fell 10 runs short in their run chase against Sheffield United in the Yorkshire ECB Premier League Cup.

Wainwright took 4-4 from 7.1 overs as Sheffield were bowled out for 203 with John Randerson claiming 3-52, including the vital wickets of top scorers Waqar Ahmed (81) and Lesroy Weekes (40).

Castleford began their reply solidly with a 58-run opening stand between Charles Finan (30) and Luke Frankland (15) and they looked well placed when they reached 99-3 then 141-4.

But Nathan Smith (26) and Wainwright (38) were dismissed in close succession to leave the score on 145-6 and the lower order men could not quite bring it home as Cas were all out for 193 with overs still in hand.

Castleford seconds’ match against Hovingham II in Division Three of the York Senior League was conceded by their opponents to give Cas the full 30 points.

Jack Young hit a superb unbeaten 57 as Castleford under 11s beat Hensall by 14 runs after making a net score of 276.

Castleford under 15s lost a cup tie by 13 runs to Whitley Bridge despite 49 from Luke Edwards and 10 runs and two wickets for Jack Young.
