Pontefract’s Bill Pinder lost early after losing a knight for a pawn in end game. Chris Roche accepted a book draw in a rook pawn ending.

Dave Parton and opponent both queened past pawns at the same time for agreed draw before Norman Carr restored parity winning a bishop in a fine ending.

New recruit Peter Cooper gave Pontefract a brief 3-2 lead by gaining a rook for a bishop then winning a queen.

Wakefield hit back as Adam Routledge had badly connected rooks which resulted in his opponent promoting a pawn. Mateusz Szczepaniuk’s inferior pawn structure told in the ending and he lost.

Steve Parker held out for a draw against Peter Shaw, one of the league leading players, but the match belonged to Wakefield.
