Due to the impact of Covid-19, many of the usual activities and events aren't taking place as planned, so the council has created a summer guide packed with ideas for children of all ages and for adults who have discovered a new appreciation for walking.

The illustrated newspaper includes a guide to the district’s country parks and green spaces, which are great places for children and adults to explore, pack a picnic and have an adventure.

There's even a handy pull-out map in the centre! They can go on a virtual dinosaur hunt at Pugneys Country Park and a fairy walk at Newmillerdam, with guided walks and quizzes along the way. Or follow a bike trail in the district’s beautiful countryside.

There’s also lots of ideas, about what families can do on their own doorsteps such as looking out for wildlife, such as birds and butterflies, and taking part in a treasure hunt from home.

Residents are being encouraged to share their activities using the hashtag #doorstepdiscoveries on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Coun Jacquie Speight, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport at Wakefield Council, said: “We know this summer isn’t at all how many of us had planned it to be. The pandemic has had an impact on all our lives. I hope we can all take pleasure in what’s nearby to our homes.

“There are a huge range of ideas and opportunities in our guide to inspire everyone to explore what’s close to home, and also in the wider district, so I’d encourage everyone to be as active as they can and to enjoy their summer.”

A number of the district’s attractions are beginning to plan to safely reopen this summer, in line with Government advice, with social distancing measures in places.
